How does an instrument change pitch?

Hi, i had to make an xylophone for my physics project. I used metal tubes and cut them to different sizes. I need to explain how the xylophone changes pitch and how the loudness of the xylophone can be controlled (amplitude).

SMART AND WELL EXPLAINED ANSWER WILL GET BEST ANSWER!!How does an instrument change pitch?
Pitch is defined by vibration of the metal tubes, yeah? The small tubes vibrate at higher frequencies and produce higher pitches.

The harder you hit the tubes, the bigger the oscillation of the wave.

Just answering off the top of my head and not bothering to get out my calculations. Heh.
